The Van Trump Report

America’s Biggest Ranches Currently for Sale

I always like looking at farms and ranches that are for sale. As we start the new year, here’s a snapshot of the biggest ranches currently on the market throughout the US. They combine for over +2.2 million acres, and this collection of ranches and farmland represents the sprawling and monumental diversity of land for sale across the country. I’ve had the luxury of visiting a couple of mega ranches while on my travels in the ag business. I can’t say I’m not jealous, as I would love to one day have a good-sized ranch to leave to the kids and keep in the family trust forever. I always felt like my grandfather’s small cattle operation was just enough to bring the family back together at least a couple of times per year. We would always do a huge family reunion extended weekend type event each summer, cooking catfish from the ponds, gigging frogs and eating frog legs late at night, grilling burgers on an open flame from the cattle he raised, ridding three-wheelers, and just sitting around the campfires listening to good stories from the old-timers. Yes, there was also the hard work, but I wouldn’t have traded it for the world. Great times! (Source: LandReport)

Great Western Ranch, New Mexico – 225,582 AcresThe Great Western Ranch is  strategically positioned in the heart of one of the most prolific big game and optimal livestock grazing areas of the western United States. The ranch is a haven for wildlife, attracting hunters worldwide with its thriving populations of elk, mule deer, antelope, and mountain lions, supported by a lucrative outfitting lease. Total deeded acreage is 225,582+/-, while also offering 109,192+/- acres of State lease and 167,593+/- acres of BLM leased land interspersed throughout the ranch. Well-watered, there are 86 currently functional and operational wells and hundreds of dirt tanks, catch ponds, seasonal playas, ponds, small lakes, and stock tanks for livestock and wildlife watering. Approximately 2,230+/- miles of fence, including perimeter, and 134+/- pastures have been strategically put into place, allowing for ease of livestock handling and rotational grazing practices. Subject to the size of a cow and bull, livestock management practices, and climate conditions, the ranch will support one of the largest livestock operations in the country. The improvements on the ranch are functional, adequate housing is available, and numerous ranch outbuildings are available to fully accommodate the demands of a robust agriculture and wildlife operation. Internal road infrastructure has been developed to provide access to the remotest locations on the ranch. Rich in history, the land bears traces of Anasazi civilization, Spanish explorers, and early homesteaders. This property lists for $142,000,000.

Bering Pacific Ranches, Alaska – 230,000 Acres: This massive ranch lies northwest of the contiguous United States and Hawaii, clinging to the heart of the Cradle of Storms, as locals call this region of Alaska. Resembling a strand of emeralds set against a steely gray sea, the Aleutian Islands reach for Asia with the snow-capped peaks of dozens of volcanoes peppered by the domes of small Russian Orthodox churches. The 686-square-mile Umnak Island is just west of Dutch Harbor. Seventy-two miles long and 16 miles wide with a volcano of its own, the island is also the home of the nearly 500,000-acre Bering Pacific Ranches with its 10,000 head of cattle. There are about 10,000 reindeer, a small bison herd on the far end of the island, and a few wild horses. The Okmok volcano and other mountains in the center of Umnak Island separate the ranch from the village a little more than 40 miles away. The ranch house, housing for cowboys, slaughterhouse, and pens were originally part of Fort Glenn, a World War II Army air base that was effectively abandoned a few years after the Japanese surrendered. The slaughter plant was built up from the concrete foundation of one of the military structures. The ranch maintains a small herd of 11 saddle horses, but the real work bringing in the cattle is done with a two-seat helicopter. With stock ranging 50 miles or more from the pens, The ranch found horses to be impractical across such distances of rough terrain. The ranch becomes fully operational in the fall months, each season processing 500 to 1,000 head with 40 to 60 head per day after the cattle have been rounded into pens following a summer spent fattening up. This property lists for $11,700,000

Butte Valley Ranch, Nevada – 860,000 Acres: The ranch has a long history being run as a successful sheep and cattle operation, with the total 20,641 AUMs split between cattle and sheep. The ranch is currently running approx. 700 head of cattle and 4,000 – 5,000 head of sheep. A new owner has the ability to improve the operation and increase the carrying capacity to 1,500 – 2,000 head of cattle as the ranch has the ground and feed to support it. There are currently 570 acres under pivot irrigation with approx. 2,000 acres of riparian meadow. The water situation on the ranch could also be improved without a huge investment. Updated improvements at the ranch headquarters include a new 2,800 sq. ft. building complex split between a shop and an 8 bedroom living quarters well suited for management/workers or hunting lodge. There are several other locations on the ranch that are well suited for additional living quarters or family lodge, including a serene, flat building area that sits above a few of the ponds and overlooks the vast valley to the southwest. The ranch is also located in one of the best hunting areas of Nevada and includes 2 bull elk tags annually in units 104, 108 and 121. PRF Insurance is an integral part of the operation, allowing the owner to not be solely dependent on livestock and farming operations in drought years. This economically run ranch, with a balanced management program and an experienced team ready to stay on, presents a truly unique opportunity to build a thriving agricultural empire on a scale that’s, well, just a tad larger than most. This property lists for $13,500,000.
