One of the things I’ve been talking about recently is AI and what it might mean for agriculture over the next decade. The reality is that AI isn’t going to transform farming simply because someone builds a better software platform. It starts with data. Industries like banking, healthcare, and logistics have benefited from AI because they’ve spent years collecting and organizing massive amounts of information. Agriculture has always been different. Much of the farm remains disconnected, data is scattered across multiple systems, and many critical assets still rely on manual checks and human observation.
That’s why I’m excited about our partnership with Emergent Connext. What caught my attention isn’t just the AI component—it’s that they started by solving the connectivity problem first. Their platform uses long-range wireless technology and proven sensor systems to connect assets that have traditionally been difficult to monitor, including grain bins, irrigation systems, remote pumps, livestock operations, fuel tanks, and other critical infrastructure. In short, they’re helping producers gather real-time information from parts of the operation that often operate with little visibility.
Once the data is flowing, it becomes much more valuable. Emergent’s AI platform, “Ask Rip,” allows operators to interact with information from their own operation in a simple and practical way. Instead of relying on generic benchmarks or industry averages, producers can ask questions and receive answers based on what is actually happening on their farm, in real time.
What I like most is that this isn’t really a technology story—it’s a margin story. Better information leads to better decisions. Whether it’s managing fuel purchases, monitoring grain conditions, tracking water usage, reducing labor requirements, or identifying maintenance issues before they become expensive problems, the goal is the same: improve efficiency, reduce risk, and protect profitability.
This isn’t limited to large row-crop operations. The same principles apply across livestock, specialty crops, retailers, distributors, and agribusinesses of all sizes. Every operation has critical assets that generate costs, create risk, or impact productivity. The better those assets are monitored and managed, the more value is created over time.
What I respect about Emergent Connext is that they built the system in the right order. Connectivity first. Data second. Intelligence third. The technology isn’t trying to replace good operators; it’s designed to help experienced people make better decisions with better information.
Agriculture is still in the early innings of adopting AI, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the operations that build a strong data foundation today will likely be the ones best positioned to benefit from the technology tomorrow.
